DALLAS (AP) - SMU defeated Navy 40-34 in a game on Friday night. Tanner Mordecai, the quarterback for SMU, led the team with 336 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Additionally, Mordecai had a 60-yard touchdown run, and all of his touchdowns were for 20-plus yards. SMU's Dylan Goffney also had a great game with four catches for a team-high 116 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown.
Navy fought back with quarterback Tai Lavatai carrying the ball 25 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Lavatai also had two passing touchdowns and an interception, completing nine of 22 attempts for 137 yards. The third pass of the game for Navy resulted in a 24-yard touchdown for Vincent Terrell Jr. just before halftime. Navy began the second half with a 75-yard drive, resulting in a 15-yard touchdown run by Lavatai.
Former President George W. Bush was in attendance, adding to the excitement of the game. In the fourth quarter, Mordecai connected with Roderick Daniels Jr. for a 27-yard touchdown, giving SMU a 40-20 lead. Although Navy scored with just nine seconds left in the game, SMU recovered their onside kick and secured the victory.
